The sound of Malmö

The City of Malmö, in Sweden, paid a communications agency SEK 485,000 to produce “the sound of Malmö”, which includes the silence of a library. The sound will create a sound identity for the city, something in which they are unique among Sweden’s municipalities and government agencies.

The City’s communications strategists said: “We really need this. It opens up an opportunity to consciously use sound.” A year after the sound had been recorded, it had only been used once.

“The sound of Malmö” shows how interest groups can easily take over and start to influence the use of taxpayers’ money. Behind this kind of initiative are communication strategists, “sound experts” and consultancies who, with the help of contacts in the political world, manage to steer the use of taxpayers’ money towards purposes completely at odds with those valued by the citizens themselves.
